Employee appreciation doesn’t have to be stiff or scripted.

When humor and gratitude come together, recognition feels more authentic, and a whole lot more fun.

In a world of increasing workplace stress and disconnection, appreciation is essential. When done well, appreciation not only improves morale, it fuels retention, trust, and team cohesion. But in a quarter where we’re talking about Thriving with Humor, we’re reminded that recognition doesn’t have to be boring. Some of the most memorable and meaningful moments of appreciation are infused with joy, creativity, and a bit of laughter.

Humor is a powerful connector. It can build psychological safety, reinforces belonging, and creates social connection. Research shows that employees who feel appreciated show significantly higher levels of job satisfaction, performance, productivity and commitment. And while formal recognition programs matter, the most lasting impact often comes from spontaneous, heartfelt, and even playful appreciation.

Appreciation should be integrated into team culture, during work hours, in ways that honor diverse communication styles and work-life boundaries. For example, our board meetings open with an intentional icebreaker. This simple ritual helps us connect on a human level before diving into strategy, and it has made a noticeable difference in how we collaborate as we get to know each other more.

To take your appreciation efforts further, we recommend combining recognition with levity. Consider:

  • Having people join meetings with a silly virtual background

  • Creating team appreciation memes

  • Kicking off meetings with a fun question

  • Create fun employee awards, for example “The MacGyver Award” for solving complex problems, the “The Pun Intended Award” for the person known for always making a dad joke, “The Sunshine Award” for the person who is always bringing the positivity

  • Have a workplace decoration challenge, silly sock day, or other easy activities for your workforce to participate in.

Ultimately, appreciation doesn't have to be complicated but it does need to be genuine. And when you add a little humor to the mix? It becomes something people remember, return to, and want to be part of.
