The Science of Laughter

We’re highlighting an evidence-based episode that unpacks laughter from every angle: brain science, social behavior, evolutionary biology, and even public health.

This quarter at WTT we’ve been exploring how humor can help us thrive at work. For our December podcast selection, we’re featuring an episode from the Inside Science podcast by BBC Radio 4: “The Science of Laughter” with host Marnie Chesterton who is joined by laughter expert and neuroscientist, Professor Sophie Scott, and an expert in making people laugh, comedian Miles Jupp, in this episode.

Why We Love It

This is not your average wellness podcast. The Science of Laughter brings warmth, depth, and delight in equal measure, bridging science and humor in a way that feels both informative and joyful. You'll learn that laughter is profoundly social, contagious, and even measurable in brain scans, but also hear why you’re far more likely to laugh in company than alone.

As your organization explores how humor can support connection, culture, and communication at work, this episode offers a playful reminder that laughter is deeply human, and supporting humanity in the workplace is always a great idea.

What You'll Learn

  • The neurobiology of laughter, including how our brains process humor

  • Why humans laugh more with others, not alone

  • How laughter yoga and simulated laughter affect wellbeing

  • What nonhuman animals (like rats) can teach us about joy

  • Why comedians often understand timing better than scientists
